Deaconess Midtown Hospital
Unit 4800 ICU Renovation
In order to add additional ICU beds, Deaconess Midtown Hospital converted shell space and an obstetrics unit into a new ICU unit. The new unit provides technologically advanced trauma and cardiac care for patients in critical condition.
Altogether, 22 ICU rooms were created, three of which are for pediatric trauma. These rooms are sized to accommodate universal care as census dictates which allows the patients to stay in the same room and still have all the amenities in a regular patient room. Hafer was challenged with creating a design that minimizes construction noise since this renovation took place over an operational surgery department. In order to keep this department in operation with minimal disruption, all phases of the construction were planned and phased in great detail. The design of specialized scaffolding was also included that allowed work to occur in the operating room ceiling cavity.
A decentralized nurse station model promotes efficient care and allows nursing staff to be closer to these critically ill patients.
