Deaconess Gateway Hospital
New Hospital
The 116-bed full service, acute-care hospital for Deaconess Health System at the Gateway campus is designed, in association with HOK, to offer expandability and greater work efficiencies. Located on 60 acres, the building’s design and concept reflects the hospital’s continued commitment towards patient satisfaction and utilization of the latest health care technology.
The hospital is separated into three buildings including the main hospital, heart hospital and medical office building all united by a “Main Street” atrium. Inside the main entrance, a two-story atrium with numerous skylights forms the nexus of the Main Street. Patients and visitors are invited into Main Street by sounds of the oceans and a sense of serenity. The color palette is calming and relaxing, mixed with sophistication of subtle design features.
The main hospital houses imaging, emergency services, labs, a kitchen and a pharmacy on the first floor; surgery on the second floor; mechanical operations on the third floor; and patient rooms on floors four through six. The individual patient rooms were designed with the patient’s care and family’s comfort in mind, as well as efficiency for the physicians and nursing staff. Nature is referenced through curvilinear walls and floor patterns, decorative mosaic wall tiles and large windows focused on scenic views.
The heart facility features office and diagnostic services on the first floor; two operating rooms, four catheter labs with two rooms designed for future catheter labs and pre- and post-operation rooms on the second floor; 24 patient rooms on the third floor. The patient rooms were designed to implement multi-acuity care so that patients won't have to be moved from room to room.
The overall design allows the hospital to double in size in a cost-effective manner, which it did - years after the original construction. Because of the careful planning upfront, the tower additions have been a smooth process. In addition to accommodating for future growth, the hospital optimizes the delivery of healthcare services by strategically located departments, nursing stations, etc. It is evident through the amazing growth of this hospital that this project was a success.
