Western Kentucky Veteran’s Center

Expansion

In increasing numbers, WWII and Korean War Veterans have indicated a desire to move to the Western Kentucky Veteran’s Center with many more being placed on a waiting list for long term, residential care. To meet the demand for rooms in the Center, Hafer was hired to design an expansion of this facility.

After some research and planning, it was determined that the greatest need was the ability to serve residents with dementia or Alzheimer’s Disease. With this particular patient population, Hafer used the home model concept to design the expansion. The three homes contain 36 long-term care, single occupancy rooms. The home model design promotes the residential feel by having their own amenities including a kitchen, living area and den. This quality allows residents to live in an atmosphere reminiscent of their past lives.

The homes are surrounded with secure, exterior courtyards where residents can enjoy the outdoor spaces safely. The buildings introduce natural light into the interior circulation spaces to brighten and warm spaces that can otherwise be sterile and uninviting.

These homes were full as soon as they opened. Residents and their families love the home model concept and feel it makes a positive impact on their lives. Residents also appreciate the sense of community the central living areas create.
