Deaconess Gateway Hospital

In order to handle a larger volume of patients, the Emergency Department was expanded and renovated and organized by acuity-based treatment rooms. It was extremely important to complete this expansion while the emergency department remained in operation. Through careful planning, this project was built with minimal disruption.

Hafer worked closely with Deaconess staff and administration to ensure the spaces in which patients were being treated were organized in a manner that allowed the least acute patients to be fast tracked upon entering the Emergency Department. The more acute patients were brought further back into the unit. This layout helped to speed up the treatment room turnaround time. Hafer utilized 3D computer walk-throughs during design development so that staff could better relate and respond to the design early in the process.

This project included seven treatment rooms, eight observation rooms, seven renovated adult treatment rooms, four renovated pediatric treatment rooms, two renovated triage rooms, a four bay discharge lounge and two psychiatric treatment rooms. An enlarged lobby area with private bay registration was added to ensure patient privacy. Great care was taken to create a family-friendly, hospitable environment while still integrating the latest in technology and security.
